Sights in San Lucas (9)

Collecting and bringing home firewood is often a daily task for hundreds of children in the San Lucas area.

Almost all cooking is done on wooden fires. Bottled gas is available but relatively expensive.

Firewood nearby gets used up quickly, and often the children have to walk for forty five minutes or an hour, to their land or to common land, chop up the firewood with their machetes, and then carry it home on their backs.

Children are used to working, and see themselves as helping their family, rather than "being exploited"
