Sights in San Lucas (5)

The parish church of San Lucas dates from the late 1500's

It was built by Spanish Missionaries, using local labor. (it's unclear if the Mayans they used to build it were willing converts or slaves)

The church was nearly destroyed in a local earthquake of 1990, and was out of use for several months. US Engineers managed to force concrete into the cracks in the walls, and save the building

Priests from the New Ulm diocese have looked after the parish for the last forty years - San Lucas is now the last mission parish in the local diocese, as local clergy take over.
