They can go to the school of their choice, within the San Lucas area
None
6th grade teachers recommend bright, needy students who will
need sponsorship to be able to study in secondary school the
following year. Students not sent by their teachers can also ask to be
in the program. Their 6th grade marks and the economic
situation of their family are taken account, before they are put on the
project waiting list
Unfortunately no. By their nature, students from poor families
live a precarious life, and each year, sadly, a small number drop
out.
Many others get on their school honor lists.
We ask sponsors, where possible, to sponsor a
student for the three years of junior high. Some students go on to high school,
and sometimes their sponsors wish to continue to help them in the three
years of high school - that decision is entirely up to their sponsors
Yes, schools give me copies of the students' marks each semester. The schools are regularly visited, some
several times a week, and teachers will often tell me if they have concerns
about particular students.
Students normally write to their sponsors three times a year, more if there are special reasons for so doing. Sponsors
are free to write or email their students via
SLT Scholars
No. They write their own letters. The only letters not sent would be if the student was asking the sponsor
for extra help - a request for extra help should be made by the student to the project, which sometimes receives money
for just this purpose.
We pay for the translation of letters from students to their sponsors. Postage, paper, ink for the computer, etc...
have up to now been donated by friends. My time is donated and there are no staff costs.
At least 98% of the money sponsors send
goes to pay the student's tuition and related costs.
The school year starts in the middle of January and finishes in the middle of October - November
and December are the months of the Harvest
